OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A former bookkeeper who embezzled almost half a million dollars from a Christian school faced a judge in federal court today. A First Alert 6 investigation first revealed details of the shocking theft.

After her sentencing in federal court, Joya Kinney gets hugs of comfort from about 60 friends, family, and church members. They declined interviews and instead let a shielding circle around Kinney do their talking.

Despite the strong support in and out of court, a federal judge wasn’t so forgiving in sentencing Kinney. The former bookkeeper for Cornerstone Christian School in Bellevue must spend nine months in federal prison and three years on supervised release.
