A judge ordered a South Jersey man held in jail before trial on accusations of shooting a woman in what is described as an instance of road rage.

Ernest Heinz, 46, of Port Republic, appeared for a detention hearing on Thursday, exactly two weeks after allegedly following the woman in his car, shooting her in the face outside of Stockton University in Galloway Township.

The university’s campus was ordered to shelter in place for about three hours while police searched for Heinz. He was arrested later that day at a township home and charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

In a hearing that lasted about 20 minutes, his lawyer, Robin Kay Lord, argued for Heinz’s release on certain conditions, including house arrest and revocation of his driving privilege
