LANSING, Mich. — The federal government is suing the state of Michigan over its voter registration lists.

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed lawsuits against six states, accusing them of failing to provide statewide voter registration lists, as is required under federal law.

Michigan, along with California, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania, refused to turn over the lists to the federal government, which claimed in the lawsuits that the U.S. Attorney General is uniquely charged by congress with the enforcement of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), which were subsequently created in 1993 and 2002, and signed into law by former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
