CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The family of a Charlotte 4-year-old who was killed last week are still trying to comprehend why the boy was shot.

Charlotte police said Jayce Edwards died when thieves who were allegedly stealing a car outside of Edwards’ home shot at the townhouse.

The boy’s grandmother, Victoria Wheeler, who was raising Edwards and his brothers, said she remembered hearing three or four gunshots and Edwards’ scream.

“I would like to know why they shot, what was the reason for the shooting when you already had what you wanted,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler and Edwards’ great aunt, La Shonda Edwards, met WBTV on Thursday at the Airport Overlook, which was one of Edwards’ favorite places.

They are remembering the 4-year-old for his friendly, funny, and playful nature.
