CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - An ambulance in Uptown Charlotte was hit by gunfire early Thursday morning. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said that two people were arrested and no one was hurt.

Lawmakers are pushing for legislation to give public safety departments funding to buy safety equipment.

Chief Jimmy Lentz with Cabarrus County EMS said the department bought bulletproof vests for crews back in 2016. The hefty price tag on the life-saving equipment is why some state senators are now working to pass a bill to give crews the money they need.

“It is becoming more common in the field to see EMS providers in ballistic protection,” said Lentz. “We were fortunate we were one of the first in the area.”
