Amazon is facing trial in Seattle federal court over allegations that the e-commerce giant tricked customers into signing up for Prime memberships and made it deliberately difficult to cancel subscriptions, CBS News reports.
Jury selection began Monday in the case brought by the Federal Trade Commission, with opening arguments and witness testimony beginning Tuesday. The trial at the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington is expected to last up to four weeks, according to CBS.
The FTC announced the lawsuit in 2023, claiming Amazon engaged in what regulators called a “years-long effort” to deceive millions of customers into automatically renewing Prime subscriptions through user-interface designs that were “manipulative, coercive or deceptive.”
