SHELTON, Conn. — A new program in Shelton is catching drivers who blow past stopped school buses, a violation that officials say puts children in danger.

In just two weeks, more than 600 violations were recorded by high-definition cameras mounted on school buses, according to Shelton police and BusPatrol, the company behind the technology.

“Moments like this are not unusual,” said Adam Schafer with BusPatrol, who spent years in the transportation field. “Almost impossible. You’re managing a bus full of children, paying attention to what’s on the road, and making sure every child is safe.”

Previously, bus drivers were often responsible for noting down license plates and reporting violations — something Schafer said was rarely practical.
