Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted by a grand jury. The move caps a years-long effort by President Donald Trump punish the former top federal law enforcement officer he fired in 2017 for investigating his 2016 campaign's contacts with Russia.

A federal grand jury handed up an indictment charging Comey with giving a false statement and obstructing a congressional investigation, according to the Justice Department.

The indictment came just days after Trump publicly called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek criminal charges against Comey and two other political antagonists, California Sen. Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
