CNN legal analyst Elie Honig said the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey on Thursday represents a "remarkable moment" for the Department of Justice.
"He was the director of the FBI," Honig said. "Having to sit at the criminal defendant's table is a remarkable moment. I don't mean that in a positive or negative way, but it's a shocking moment."
CNN reported on Thursday that President Donald Trump's Department of Justice returned an indictment from a grand jury against James Comey on two counts of obstruction of justice and lying to Congress. The indictment was the result of months of public pressure exerted by Trump to indict Comey, whom he views as his political opponent.
It is unclear what exact statutes Comey will be charged under because the indictment itself is still under seal.
"He was seen as a giant, as somebody who had had an exemplary career," Honig said. "Now he did things later that were more controversial around the 2016 election, but I'm sure it's going to be a shocking, humbling moment for Jim Comey to have to sit at that criminal defendants' table in a federal courtroom."
