President Donald Trump for the third time threatened federal intervention in Portland, saying inaccurately that the city is in “anarchy.”
The president appeared to be referring to the ongoing protests outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in South Portland. Those protests peaked in June, with flare-ups off-and-on since then, but have involved no more than several dozen people in recent weeks.
“We’re going to do a pretty big number on those people in Portland that are doing that,” Trump said. “They’re professional agitators and anarchists.”
The president and his aides were answering reporters’ questions Thursday when Vice President JD Vance said that paid and organized “men in black ski masks” were “committing acts of political terrorism” in Oregon.
