NEW ALBANY, Ind. — The Highlander Fire Protection District has received a $146,000 federal grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program for new gear.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA are allocating the grant money for the purchase of new, high-quality gear for firefighters including helmets, jackets, pants, boots and gloves.

Safety officer Kody Macon said the crew's current gear has far outlived its lifespan.

Macon pointed out jackets and helmets in their collection that are beyond their intended use.

The National Fire Protection Association's standards indicate gear is safe to use for 10 years. Macon said their gear is nearly two decades old.

The Highlander Fire Protection District's current equipment is nearly two decades old.
