TARRANT COUNTY, Texas — A North Texas man cleared of a felony hate crime in a church graffiti case is facing a new charge by the Tarrant County District Attorney.
Raunaq Alam, convicted of criminal mischief by a Tarrant County Jury last week, is back behind bars. Phil Sorrells took a Perjury Charge to the Grand Jury and won an indictment, according to Alam's Defense Attorney.
"This is clearly retaliation for losing his felony hate crime charge against my client," said Attorney Adwoa Asante.
Cameras at Uncommon Church in Euless recorded Alam and two others spray painting profanity as part of their protest against Israel.
Alam is a self-proclaimed activist whose attorney argued in court that he was exercising his right to freedom of speech and protest. Sorrells added a hate crime cha
