COLUMBIA, S.C. — Master Trooper Wayne LaBounty, a 40-year veteran of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, has been released from the hospital and transferred to a rehabilitation facility after being struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop earlier this month, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
LaBounty was seriously injured on the morning of September 9 while conducting a traffic stop on Highway 1 between Lost Branch Road and Calks Ferry Road. Officials said a vehicle failed to stop in time behind a Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputy, leading to a chain reaction crash that struck multiple vehicles and left LaBounty seriously injured. He was airlifted to Prisma Health for treatment.
