The Old Saybrook Police Commission has unanimously approved the appointment of William "Billy" Onofrio as the town's next chief of police.

The Police Commission held a special meeting Thursday night to discuss the new chief's appointment. It was held at 6 p.m.

In a post on social media, the Old Saybrook Democratic Town Committee said the decision was formalized in a room packed with police personnel.

During the meeting, Onofrio talked about the importance of service and family in his career as a law enforcement official.

Earlier this month, the police commission's executive search committee said they reached an agreement on the selection of the next chief of police.
