BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Baton Rouge is shining a little brighter these days, thanks to restored and upgraded street lights that city leaders say are improving visibility and reducing crime. The effort is part of the ongoing “Lighting Up Baton Rouge” initiative.

From Scotlandville to downtown, new LED street lamps are transforming neighborhoods. More than 407 lights were recently installed in Scotlandville, replacing outdated high-pressure sodium bulbs. Similar upgrades have already brightened Plank Road, Sherwood Forest Boulevard, and Goodwood Boulevard.

“When the area is lit up, it feels more secure, it looks more secure, people are less likely to do things they’re not supposed to do,” said Lon Vicknair, Chief of Staff in the Mayor’s Office.
