ORTING, Wash. — In the City of Orting in Pierce County, hundreds of people have united to support a coach who has spent more than 25 years shaping young lives and is now facing one of the toughest battles of her own.

Coach Gariann Frey, a longtime volleyball coach and graduate of Orting High School, was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

This is her third battle with cancer. She had Hodgkins Lymphoma twice in her 20s.

“This April would have been 30 years of being in remission,” she said. “And then I found a lump.”

Frey has coached many athletes through Orting High School and Rainier Volleyball Club.

“They're such good girls,” Frey said of her team. “The whole program, my seniors have been amazing.”
