OTTAWA — The union representing postal workers declared Thursday it had triggered a nationwide strike after the federal government announced sweeping changes to Canada Post, including the end of door-to-door delivery.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), which has been locked in a months-long labour dispute with Canada Post’s management, announced the move hours after Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound unveiled the changes.

On its website, the union called the move an “attack on our postal service and workers,” and said its 55,000 postal workers would be on strike immediately.

Before the changes were announced, union president Jan Simpson said that the union had received no warning about the announcement.
