A paper storage facility is well-alight in Sydney's east, with embers threatening cars in nearby streets.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW said the factory fire on Botany Road in Matraville has been classified as a "six-alarm fire" with 20 trucks and 80 firefighters heading to the scene.

The fire is being driven by strong winds blowing from the south-west.

As smoke continues to engulf the area, emergency services are advising people to avoid the area and keep doors, windows and vents shut.

Firefighters are investigating reports that the fire has ignited multiple cars near the scene.

More to come.
