MANCHESTER, N.H. —

The Boston Red Sox are hoping to make the playoffs for the first time in four years.

They had a chance to clinch a spot Thursday night, but the Toronto Blue Jays beat them 6-1.

The Sox need just one more win to return to October baseball. Boston last reached the ALCS in 2021.

A loss by the Houston Astros also could have secured a playoff berth for Boston, but Houston defeated the Athletics 11-5 on Thursday.

The Red Sox will host the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
