The 12-year-old boy allegedly murdered in Melbourne's outer west has been remembered as a loving brother and son who dreamed of a career in basketball and was wise beyond his years.

About 200 people filled an Anglican church in Sunbury on Friday to farewell Chol Ahiek, who was allegedly killed alongside his 15-year-old friend Dau Akueng in Cobblebank earlier this month.

As the mourners were seated, the 12-year-old's coffin was carried to the front of the church for the duration of a two-hour service.

Those gathered stood in a sombre silence as it was carried into a hearse afterwards.

"Just a few weeks ago we were together, and now life looks so different without him," Chol's older sister, Monica Achiek, told the service.
