Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud invoked the 2023 arrest case of Congress leader Pawan Khera when he was asked at the India Today Conclave whether he had deliberately transferred bail matters -- including the bail plea of student activist Umar Khalid -- to Justice Bela Trivedi, who was seen as less inclined to grant relief.

Dismissing the claims as "unsubstantiated" and stating that bail was prioritised during his tenure, Chandrachud added that they had granted bail in over 21,000 cases and that when it was claimed a particular individual didn’t get bail, in his court every individual who deserved bail had received it.
