INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman died in an early Friday morning shooting on the far east side.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers received a report of a person shot at an apartment in the 10100 block of John Jay Drive at 3:18 a.m.

When officers arrived, they located an adult female with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition where she later died.

Capt. Don Weilhammer with IMPD said the shooting appeared to stem from a domestic dispute.

"What we know right now is this is some type of domestic disturbance between her and her boyfriend," Weilhammer said.

As of 5 a.m. Friday, IMPD didn't have a suspect in custody. Homicide detectives have been called to the scene and are handling the investigation.
