LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined 17 other states in opposing a proposed class action settlement involving Capital One, arguing that it shortchanges consumers and lets the company off the hook for deceptive practices.
Nessel says the settlement fails to hold Capital One accountable for allegedly misleading customers and denying them over $2 billion in unpaid interest. She says that the agreement benefits Capital One more than the consumers it deceived.
At the center of the dispute are Capital One’s 360 Savings accounts, which were marketed as ‘high interest’ accounts offering ‘one of the nation’s best savings rates.’
However, as national interest rates began to rise in 2022, Capital One kept the rates on these accounts artificially low.
