Rising output from the expanded Trans Mountain pipeline helped push the Port of Vancouver to record cargo shipments in the first half of 2025.
According to statistics released by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority on Friday, crude oil is now its second-largest single-commodity export, behind only coal.
Shipments of crude oil, mostly diluted bitumen from Alberta’s oilsands, hit 11.6 million tonnes in the first six months of 2025, a 365 per cent increase from the same period of 2024.
That played a big part in the 13 per cent increase — to 85 million tonnes — of overall cargo moved through the port between January and June. That total includes container shipments, which were largely unchanged year over year.
