New laws to protect Oregonians’ privacy, screen newborns to prevent potentially serious disabilities and shield children from cannabis marketing take effect Friday.

That means you can sue if the owner or operator of a short-term vacation rental who takes a photo or video of you or a family member during your stay. And children and teens will no longer see ads or packaging for marijuana products designed to especially appeal to them.

Lawmakers passed hundreds of bills this year , some of which have already gone into effect and others that won’t kick in until 2026.

But these four are among the few significant ones that became effective today.
