ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is pushing back against reports that it will no longer cover GLP-1 medications, saying drugs used to treat certain medical conditions remain covered.
The insurer said GLP-1 medications prescribed for diabetes will still be included on its list of covered drugs. However, effective Jan. 1, 2026, three GLP-1 medications prescribed for weight loss, Wegovy, Zepbound and Saxenda, will be removed from the list for certain health plans.
“These medications can still be covered through an exception request as long as the prescriber can verify that the member meets our coverage criteria,” the company said in a statement issued to News 8 WROC.
