With Tulsa knocking off Oklahoma State (while ending Mike Gundy’s long coaching career there) and Memphis upsetting Arkansas last weekend, the American Conference increased its win total to six against Power 4 conferences—the same number as the other four Group of 5 leagues combined. For those counting, the Mountain West has four, the Sun Belt and Mid-American conferences one and Conference USA none.

By record, the American is 6-8 against the Power 4 compared to the Mountain West’s 4-9, Sun Belt’s 1-15, MAC’s 1-20 and CUSA’s 0-10. Even the ACC has fared worse against fellow Power 4 schools, going 5-12, while the Big Ten is 5-7.

There is no other way to put it. September has been a hugely successful month for the American .
