Madurai court sentences four cops to 11 years’ RI in custodial torture death of minor in Madurai

MADURAI: Four policemen were on Friday sentenced to 11 years’ rigorous imprisonment for custodial torture of a 17-year-old boy, leading to his death in Madurai in 2019. Judge R Joseph Joy of the V additional court in Madurai also directed CB-CID to include three other cops as accused since they helped those convicted to destroy evidence. The court ordered disciplinary action against the first investigating officer of the case for shoddy investigation, and two doctors for lapses and violation of rules. The victim, Muthu Karthik, was accused of stealing gold ornaments and taken into custody on Jan 13, 2019. He died in hospital on Jan 24, 2019.
