During a late timeout with Iowa (10-3, 1-0 Big Ten) trailing Maryland 23-21 in the third set of the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten opener, the public address announcer announced Chard’e Vanzandt had surpassed 1,000 career kills earlier in the set.

It was the last thing the senior outside hitter wanted to hear in the moment.

“I was like, 'Oh, wow, that’s great,'” Vanzandt said. “But, not right now, not right now. I was like, OK, we have to finish this set.”
