WASHINGTON, D.C. – Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that soldiers who received the Medal of Honor for their actions in 1890 at Wounded Knee will be allowed to keep their awards.
Hegseth's decision follows a review ordered by his predecessor last year. A panel from the Biden administration recommended that the medals should remain as they are.
Some lawmakers had been considering revoking the awards from those involved in the massacre at South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Historical records indicate that the U.S. Army, as part of a campaign to displace tribes in the area, killed hundreds of Native Americans during the incident.
