The Massachusetts State Police Traffic Program is raising awareness about car seat safety during this year's National Child Passenger Safety Week.

Trooper Serena Trodella, who works in the traffic program section, urges caregivers to verify that their car seats are compliant and crash-tested to minimize the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash.

Trodella says properly-installed car seats reduce the risk of injury by over 71% and reduce the risk of death by 28% in comparison to children using only seat belts.

"Not only correctly sitting in the seat, having that seat installed correctly and having the caregiver know how to put the child in that seat," said Trodella.
