Sep 21, 2025; Santa Clara, California, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (13) leaves the field following the game against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium.

San Francisco 49ers fans, rejoice - there's finally good news on the injury front.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that starting quarterback Brock Purdy will return in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Purdy had no injury designation from practice today and is set to make just his second start of the season Sunday at home.

Purdy suffered multiple injuries in the 49ers' win over the Seattle Seahawks in the season opener. He dealt with an AC joint sprain in his non-throwing (left) shoulder as well as turf toe. These injuries kept him sideline for the 49ers' Week 2 game against New Orleans and Week 3 versus Arizona.

San Francisco won both games - 26-21 over the Saints and 16-15 over the Cardinals - behind backup quarterback Mac Jones.

Jones went a combined 53 of 80 (66.3%) passing for 563 yards, four touchdowns and one interception through the air. It's a good thing Purdy is ready to go; Jones was limited in practice this week with a knee injury he aggravated against Arizona.

San Francisco (3-0) hosts the 2-1 Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. They're looking to go 4-0 to open a season for the second time in three years, the first since their NFC champion campaign in 2023.

This has been a tough week of injury news for the team on both sides of the ball. Star edge rusher Nick Bosa is out for the season with a torn ACL and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk isn't close to returning to the field following his ACL and MCL tears last season.

Despite boasting the seventh-best offense by yards in the NFL through three weeks, the 49ers are 23rd in points per game at 19.7. Purdy's return could help them finish their drives with more touchdowns than field goals.

49ers QB depth chart

  • Brock Purdy
  • Mac Jones (injured)
  • Adrian Martinez

If Jones is unable to play Sunday against his former team, Martinez will be the backup. He signed with the practice squad in August after playing through training camp with the New York Jets.
