DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) - The superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools in Iowa was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday.
The Department of Homeland Security says Ian Roberts was arrested following what it called a targeted enforcement operation.
The agency says Roberts tried to evade arrest.
According to authorities, Roberts had $3,000, a hunting knife and a loaded handgun on him at the time of his arrest.
Officials noted that it is against the law for an immigrant who does not have legal status to own a firearm.
The agency said Roberts, who is from Guyana, entered the country in 1999 on a student visa and was given a final order of removal in May 2024.
Public records show he pleaded guilty to a weapons charge in 2022.
