NORFOLK, Neb. —

At first glance, it looked like a typical high school football game with two rival teams on the field, a full house, and of course, a cheering section.

But one of the cheerleaders looked a little older, a shade grayer and just a bit out of step.

Television personality Johnny Carson graduated from Norfolk High School in 1943, and on a chilly October day in 1981, he joined the cheerleading squad to root for his alma mater.
