MUSCATINE, Iowa (KWQC) - A Quad Cities Area animal rescue was forced to change how it distributes donated pet supplies after ongoing misuse of the program and increasing harassment to staff.
The pantry is for struggling pet owners in need of emergency food and supplies, said Meagan Koehler, president and founder of It Takes A Village Animal Rescue & Resources.
Koehler said there was ongoing abuse of its charity.
Staff have reported cases of donated food being “returned” to stores for cash, she said.
The shelter stopped giving out the food in its original packaging and began asking pet owners to bring in containers for the donated food.
She said that change led to staff being harassed every day, including screaming, swearing, and even threats.
