BRUNSWICK – Former Siena College basketball guard and current star golfer Kyle Downey never saw the back nine at the Country Club of Troy before, and Thursday’s rainy practice round was the first time he got a glimpse of the front nine. But the defending NYS Men’s Mid-Amateur champion was swinging and putting so well that it didn’t matter.

The 36-year-old Locust Hill CC and Oak Hill CC representative, who breezed to the title by 10 strokes a year ago at Schuyler Meadows Club, was a blistering 7-under-par through the first nine holes and finished with a 6-under-par 65 in the opening round of the 41st NYS Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Friday at the CC of Troy.
