Jon Rahm led the European charge as Europe powered out of the Ryder Cup blocks to strike first at Bethpage.
Luke Donald’s team, having won the morning foursomes by a 3-1 scoreline, extended their lead through an epic afternoon in New York.
The visitors performed brilliantly through the opening trio of matches to secure a fantastic three wins from the first three games and, despite a loss in the final match of the session, Europe roared back out in the afternoon fourballs.
Rahm won again and, with Tommy Fleetwood also collecting a second success, the door was open for Rory McIlroy to hole a putt on the last to make the lead four points. The World No.2 could not take it, but are three ahead going into Saturday's matches.
