AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Amarillo city officials announced Friday that the Animal Management and Welfare’s deceased animal depository box will close.

The city says the box’s closing comes after a review of municipal best practices and aims to improve safety, efficiency, and animal welfare.

The depository box was identified as “an operational risk and presented multiple long-term challenges.”

The city says staff were required to handle and rebag remains that were not bagged, which created risks for environmental contamination and disease transmission to other animals and people.

The box was also the site of illegal dumping by residents and businesses.
