UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore. – A petition to recall Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan has been filed, sparking a significant local response.

Kim Lindell, from the city of Umatilla, said the petition now requires 3,770 signatures from active voters within 90 days. If the petition gathers the necessary signatures, Sheriff Rowan will have five days to resign or submit a statement of justification for the ballot. An election would then be held within 35 days.

The petition was filed by Hermiston resident Antonio Espino. He cited Sheriff Rowan's DUI citation in Gilliam County on May 16 as the reason for the recall effort, arguing that such behavior is unethical for someone in his position.
