BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WPRI) — Kylee Monteiro's loved ones gathered Friday evening to remember the 18-year-old who was found dead in Rehoboth last month.
Monteiro was first reported missing by her boyfriend, 22-year-old Gregory Groom, early last month. Her disappearance prompted a weeks-long search that ended after Groom admitted to stabbing her to death and burying her in the woods near his Country Street home.
"We're just heartbroken, absolutely heartbroken," Monteiro's cousin Rebecca Learner said.
It was Learner's idea to bring Monteiro's family and friends together for a vigil to honor the teenager, who was 11 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
The goal of the vigil was not only to ensure Monteiro isn't forgotten, but to also show support for the women who may find themselves in
