HAMPTON, Tenn — This past week marked homecoming week at Hampton High School, but the word "home" holds a special meaning to the students and staff as they still haven't been able to return to their school building since it was damaged by Hurricane Helene.
"It's a family atmosphere. I mean, it's a community," HHS teacher Andrew Burks said.
However, it's a family that was almost ripped apart after Hurricane Helene last year.
"It was definitely something I've never experienced, and I don't think I wanna experience it again," teacher Phillip Arrington said.
One year ago, school in Carter County, Tennessee, was canceled on a Friday due to the chances of flooding.
