Of all the plays Michael Belvin made Friday night, his booming 66-yard punt that took several friendly Woodland Beavers bounces might’ve been the most memorable.

Not because it hushed a jubilant Columbia River Homecoming crowd that a possession earlier watched their Rapids pull within 3 with 3 minutes, 12 seconds to play. But by the time the high-arching kick fell from the night’s sky and came to a stop, it pinned the Rapids back at their own 4.

On the previous series with his team leading 17-14 with 1:47 to go, Woodland coach Glen Flanagan had two choices: go for it on fourth-and-3 from his own 30 or trust his defense that had its best showing of the young season to stop a charging Rapids team that pulled within 17-14 with 3:12 to play.
