Chris Fagan called Lachie Neale into his office on Monday. The premiership coach had an idea to present to the premiership captain.

Fagan told Neale he felt “like a bit of a dickhead” even asking the question of the dual Brownlow medallist: What would he think about being the sub in the grand final?

Neale said he’d do whatever the team needed.

“We both agreed it’s not a bad way to go,” Neale said.

The match committee was confident Neale had recovered, and knew by Sunday morning he was certain to play.

What Fagan wasn’t so sure about was whether he would perform at his best in just his second match since August 2.
