SAN FRANCISCO—Known as the ‘Voice of 49ers’ KNBR broadcaster, who has been broadcasting play-by-play games for the San Francisco 49ers since 2019, Greg Papa will no longer go on the road with them even though he is in remission from acute lymphoblastic leukemia b-cell, a form of blood cancer that affects white blood cells, which he was diagnosed with in July 2025.

At one time, he was hospitalized for 23 continuous days. The news of getting cancer was hard on him because one of his brothers, Gary, had passed away in 2009 from prostate cancer. Through immunotherapy, he is currently in remission from cancer, but he is not totally cancer-free. He needs a bone marrow transplant, and his 72-year-old brother is a rare 12-point match. He will receive the transplant in November 2025.
