PORTSMOUTH – Portsmouth showed how a cross-league match should finish.

After topping Westerly in a close game last year, the Patriots left little doubt on Friday night. Portsmouth scored four times in the first half and had a running clock in the fourth quarter as it dismantled Westerly, 49-12, at home.

Portsmouth is now off to a 3-0 start in Division I, while Westerly falls to 2-2 in D-II. The Patriots were more aggressive and physical at the point of attack and it showed on the first play from scrimmage as Adam Conheeny connected with Jack Sanderson for a 66-yard touchdown.

“Last year we didn’t have much of the passing down and this year we do,” Conheeny said. “We’re a run-heavy team and we knew they would come loading up the box so we could take some shots and we did.”
