MODESTO, Calif. —

The Modesto City Council has approved the purchase of a new armored vehicle for the police department, costing about $526,000, to replace a vehicle currently in use.

The armored vehicle is intended to help officers respond to high-risk incidents, such as barricaded subjects.

Some community members argued that the funds could be better spent on community services, but council members approved the contract unanimously this week.
