A man was beaten to death with a large stick in the unincorporated Los Angeles County community of Rowland Heights, authorities said Saturday.

Deputies were summoned just after 11 p.m. Friday to the 18000 block of Colima Road for an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Arriving deputies found a man at the intersection of Colima and Jellick Avenue suffering from blunt force trauma injuries, sheriff’s officials said. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Deputies learned a suspect with a large stick hit the man and left the location on a bus, officials said. Deputies stopped the bus and detained the person of interest.

The victim’s name was not released pending notification of relatives.
