The memory of the damage done to Detroit by corrupt former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is still too fresh for any whiff of ethical lapses by the current mayoral candidates to not be taken seriously.

Kilpatrick, who spent seven years in prison before being pardoned by President Donald Trump, brought a pay-to-play culture to City Hall, as he and his cronies wallowed in bribes, gifts and kickbacks from those seeking to do business with the city. That era ended with Detroit in bankruptcy and the state in control of its destiny.
