ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - A man is dead after police say he suffered a medical emergency prior to a single-vehicle crash off Ash Road this morning.

According to police, 76-year-old John Pickard of Granger was heading south on Ash Road just after 9:30 a.m. when the medical emergency happened.

He reportedly lost control of his pickup truck, went off the side of the road and crashed into a tree.

First responders say Pickard was found unresponsive and not breathing. He died at the scene.

According to police, Pickard did not appear to suffer any injuries from the crash itself. Rather, they believe he died from the medical emergency that happened before the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
