A 49-year-old Ngunnawal man has died after being struck by a light rail tramcar at a major intersection in central Canberra.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Northbourne Avenue and the Barton Highway in Downer at 7.15pm after receiving numerous reports a man had been hit by a passing light rail vehicle.

ACT police said the 49-year-old Ngunnawal man was treated at the scene for life-threatening injuries.

He was rushed to hospital but tragically died a short time later.

The horrific incident is the Canberra light rail line's first fatality since opening in April, 2019.

The man’s death is also the capital territory’s fourth 2025 road fatality, according to police.

The ACT Road Policing’s Major Collision team is currently probing the incident.
